Hi everyone!
First posts on any form of media always carry a strange weight of significance, which is odd since usually you’re just setting things up and don’t yet have a sense of what your voice is going to be. So, in the spirit of awkwardness (which I hope you’ll forgive), I wanted to start by letting you know what to expect from this newsletter.
About me:
I’m a freelance writer with bylines at a number of publications including Sojourners, Think Christian, Paste and Rogerebert.com. Locally in Kansas City, I’m the film editor at The Pitch, an alt-monthly magazine and website. My particular area of interest is the nexus of popular culture, faith and social justice.
I’m also writing my first book! Silver Screen Liturgy: Films to Watch and Discuss Through the Church Year, has been picked up by InterVarsity Press for publication. It’s based on an article series I wrote for Think Christian between 2020-2021. You can check out an example of that series here.
Why I’m doing this:
I’m creating this newsletter to provide regular updates on where to find my work and how the book process is coming along. I’m excited to embark on this adventure, and would love to have you along for the ride!
Did you really name your newsletter after a line in Troll 2?
Yup, I did.
That’s all for now! By way of signoff, here’s a cute picture of my cats/live-in writing assistants, Buster Kitten (left) and Tahani Al-Jameow (right). I can promise you many more alongside writing updates as things continue.
